Do I need a permit to build an agricultural building on ALR land in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley?
Most agricultural buildings on ALR land in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley require a building permit from the local municipality, and some require ALC (Agricultural Land Commission) approval depending on the use and size. Farm buildings used exclusively for farm use have different rules than non-farm use structures. Madden Renovations manages the permit process and can advise on what approvals your specific project requires.
What size barns can you build?
We've built agricultural structures ranging from small equipment shelters under 1,000 sq ft to large multi-bay clear-span buildings over 10,000 sq ft. Size is primarily governed by your lot, the permit requirements, and engineering — all of which we handle. There's no practical upper limit for what we can design and build.
What type of construction is best for BC barns — wood or steel?
Both are viable and the right choice depends on your use, budget, and aesthetic preference. Post-and-beam timber frame is traditional and excellent for livestock facilities — good insulation and appealing aesthetics. Steel clear-span is ideal for large equipment storage where unobstructed interior spans matter. We build in both and can walk you through the tradeoffs for your specific project.

Yes — we understand that farms don't stop operating for construction projects. We develop a site logistics plan before work begins that accounts for livestock movement, equipment access, harvest timing, and any other operational constraints specific to your property.
